Nothing can compare to the shocking event that took place today.

A friend of a close friend, who was a year my junior at college, committed suicide at the LUMS dorms. The entire college is in shock due to this tragedy, which no one, not even his close friends had foreseen. LUMS is a very small community of a few hundred students where everyone knows everyone else and walking onto the college campus today, I was surrounded by sorrow and gloominess. The bubble that is created by the manicured lawns and the red brick walls and a parallel elite social environment was burst in an extremely shocking manner.

No one knows why this happened and perhaps no one will ever find out. But it doesn't matter now since a precious life has been lost. My heart and prayers go out to his family and close friends. May they have the courage to stay strong through this.

At the same time, as an Alumnus, I sincerely hope that the university takes this event very seriously.

  • That is a tough one dude, I know, I've been in that situation. The worst part is never understanding the why...and it makes you realise that no matter how well you know someone, you will never truly understand them or their perspective

  • Emad i think as alumni we need to take some responsibility to bring about the much needed change. We have grown in, through and out of the system and need to help LUMS and the current student community cope with this tragedy and address the root cause.
